ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY - CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY

IN-CYLINDER DIRECT INJECTION GASOLINE ENGlNE

Mitsubishi Motors' new-generation "In-cylinder Direct Injection" technology is set to change the evolutionary course ofthe gasoline engine. The practical application ofthis technology in the realization of the ultimate high-efficiency engine has long been the dream of development engineers. The first power unit anywhere to embody the technology, the Mitsubishi In-cylinder Direct Injection Crasoline Engine realizes ultra-low fuel consumption and higher power output. In addition, by achieving significant reductions in CO2 and NOx emissions, this new engine technology will make a major contribution in preserving the global environment.

MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control System)

Employing a multi-mode variable valve-timing mechanism which incorporates a modulated displacement function, the MIVEC system regulates engine operation in three modes - low speed, high speed and MD (modulated displacement) - to match different driving situations. This technology helps the MIVEC engine to produce higher unit power outputs for a normally-aspirated production engine, to realize significant increases in torque across the full range of engine speeds, as well as to achieve class-topping fuel consumption for a high performance engine. (Powers some Japanese market MIRAGE, LANCER, GALANT and ETERNA models).

MVV ENGINE (Mitsubishi Vertical Vortex engine)

The principal feature of the MVV engine is that it induces two vertical vortices in the cylinders - one of air alone and the other ofair-fuel mixture - to promote stable, ultra-lean combustion. In addition, sensors monitor the air-fuel ratio over the whole engine speed range. The result is a more than 20% improvement in fuel consumption while retaining levels of power output and driveability comparable to those in conventional units. Using this technology, Mitsubishi Motors has recently developed a 2.5-liter lean burn power unit, the first lean-burn engine with a displacement of over 2.0-liters in the world. These engines power some MIRAGE, LANCER, GALANT, ETERNA and DIAMANTE models in Japan.

INVECS II & SPORTS MODE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The Intelligent & Innovative Vehicle Electronic Control System II has two major features: Learning Control which tailors gear shift timing to the preferences and driving patterns of individual drivers, and Optimal Control which uses the latest logic circuit technology to provide the optimal gear selections for different road conditions and situations. These features realize significant advances in Easy-Drive qualities and enable safe and strain-free vehicle operation over all road conditions without the driver having to move the shift lever from the Drive position. This revolutionary transmission also incorporates a SPORT MODE feature that enables the enthusiast driver to use it like a manual gearbox. (Standard on the New DIAMANTE and FTO models).

PRE-STROKE CONTROL FUEL INJECTION PUMP

To realize reduced NOx and smoke emissions, as well as better power output, fuel consumption and cold starting characteristics in truck and bus diesel engines, the fuel must be atomized as finely as possible - requiring higher spray pressures - as it is injected into the cylinders. The Pre-stroke Control Fuel Injection Pump employs a variable control system that regulates the quantity of pressurized fuel delivered by increasing pump plunger lift at low engine speeds and reducing it at higher speeds to maintain the optimum pumping rate. Helping to reduce emissions, this new technology is another example of Mitsubishi Motors determination to effectively address environmental issues.

SUPER-SELECT 4WD

The new PAJERO is fitted with Mitsubishi's SUPER SELECT 4WD system which offers the benefits of both full-time and part-time 4WD drive modes. In addition to tbe normal full-time 4WD mode, this innovative system enables the driver to select direct-coupled 4WD, direct-coupled low range 4WD or two-wheel drive modes. SUPER SELECT 4WD gives PAJERO outstanding performance both on-and off road with high levels of handling, stability and safety perforrnance in all drive modes.

MULTI-MODE ABS

This anti-lock brake system responds automatically to the different drive modes available with SlTPER-SELECT 4WD. Based on the Mitsubishi all-wheel 4-sensor, 3-channel 4-wheel system, unique technology enables Multi-mode ABS to accomodate center and rear differential operating characteristics and prevent the wheels locking under hard braking in all drive modes. On slippery surfaces or under emergency braking, this system delivers reassuringly firm and true braking, with outstanding directional stability and maneuverability.

DISTANCE WARNING CONTROL

This advanced system enhances road safety by monitoring the distance to the vehicle ahead and waming the driver when he gets too close. The system measures inter-vehicle distance using a laser beam emitted from the front bumper and reflected off the tail light reflector of the vehicle ahead. When it senses that the vehicle is getting too close to the vehicle ahead, the system urges caution by means of visual and audible wamings and further encourages the driver to reduce speed by automatically disengaging the automatic transmission overdrive. (Available as an option on the Debonair, FUSO large-size trucks and buses.)

PREVIEW DISTANCE CONTROL

The new Preview Distance Control system is a further evolution of Mitsubishi's Distance Waming system. A world-first technology, Preview Distance Control is linked to the cruise control and controls inter-vehicle distance to match vehicle speed. Cunently available in the DIAMANTE sedan, the system uses a laser radar to monitor the distance from the vehicle ahead, together with a CCD camera built into the rear-view mirror to provide visual recognition.

TRUCK SUPER FRAME

The Mitsubishi SUPER FRAME brings a new approach to chassis frame construction. It uses the wave connection method to join the side rails-the basic structural components of the chassis frame-to the other frame components on the sides of the side rails instead of, as with conventional frames, the flange method which connects them on the top of the side rails frames. The company is the first in Japan to employ a chassis frame that fully incorporates the wave connection method on a large-size tcuck. Because there is less concentration offorces in the wave sections than in the flanges, the SUPER FRAME realizes improved reliability and durability In addition, as well as allowing reduction in weight and gceater flexibility in body mounting. it realizes better performance over poor road surfaces. Fitted to models of THE GREAT, FIGHTER and CANTER truck series.
